German Tourist at Disney World Dies After an Amusement Ride

A 49-year-old woman who had become ill at Disney World after going on an amusement ride that simulates a space launching died Wednesday.

The woman, identified by the medical examiner's office of Orange County, Fla., as Hiltrud Bleumel, a tourist from Schmitten, Germany, took the four-minute ride Tuesday, grew dizzy and nauseated, and was hospitalized, Disney officials said. She soon became comatose.

Ms. Bleumel was the second person in less than a year to die after taking the ride, Mission: Space, on which passengers experience twice the force of gravity. Last June a 4-year-old boy collapsed while on the ride with his mother and sister. A subsequent autopsy showed that he had suffered from a rare, undiagnosed heart ailment.

It is not known whether Ms. Bleumel had some underlying medical problem that might have been worsened by the ride. An autopsy is scheduled for today, the medical examiner's office said.

A representative of the park said in a statement yesterday that Disney engineers, monitored by state regulators, "completed a thorough inspection of the attraction" overnight Wednesday "and found it to be operating properly." It reopened yesterday.

Mission: Space, in the Epcot section of the park, is so challenging that airline-type motion sickness bags are made available to riders, some of whom complain of dizziness and nausea after it is over. A warning sign posted outside the attraction cautions some people, including heart patients and pregnant women, not to ride.

The Orlando Sentinel said yesterday that a review of ambulance records showed that of 8.6 million people who took the ride before the death of the boy last June, 143 sought medical attention.

Rob Jacobs, chief of the Florida Bureau of Fair Rides Inspection, said he himself had felt ill after riding Mission: Space, which opened in August 2003.

"It is simulating liftoff, so it just depends on your intestinal fortitude and how you can stand up to these things," Mr. Jacobs said. "It's a G-force issue."

Amusement park auctions tickets for first ride on new coaster

Roller coaster fans can bid for a chance to be the first riders on The Voyage, a new wooden roller coaster at Holiday World set to debut next month.

The southern Indiana amusement park is auctioning 28 tickets for the coaster on the Web site eBay.

Proceeds from the auction, which marks the park's 60th anniversary, will support Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.

"Since last summer, we've been asked repeatedly about who gets those first rides on The Voyage," park president Will Koch said in a statement. "We decided auctioning off the first rides on opening day would be the perfect opportunity to raise some money for a worthy cause."

Top bidders will be able to enter the park an hour early on May 6. They'll also receive a T-shirt and a meal.

The Voyage is expected to be among the world's fastest and longest wooden roller coasters. During the 1.2-mile ride, speeds reach 70 mph and cars climb 173 feet, zoom through three 90-degree banked sections and drop at a 66-degree angle.

Tampa's theme park re-branded

Busch Gardens is getting a new name.

Busch Entertainment Corp., owner of eight U.S. theme parks and attractions, has changed the name to Busch Gardens Africa. It also renamed Busch Gardens Williamsburg to Busch Gardens Europe.

The changes come with a TV advertising campaign in full swing. The campaign began on March 27 on cable networks and is designed to highlight the differences in the two parks, a release said.

Tampa's Busch Gardens Africa has not yet changed its Web site to reflect its new name, but that change will be made soon, management at Busch Entertainment said in a release.

The attraction is still enjoying the attendance buzz that its new dive coaster SheiKra made when it opened last May.

Attendance was up 5.1 percent in 2005.

A North Texas development group aims to bring the Dallas-Fort Worth area its first year-round winter sports theme park.

Bearfire Group L.L.C., formed in 2004, says it has put together a team of professionals, including Orlando, Fla.-based Baker Leisure Group, Long Beach, Calif.-based Kirk Design Inc. and Burbank, Calif.-based Thinkwell Design & Production, to design and develop the Coolzone Winterplex.

The park has a $375 million pricetag and is slated for completion in late 2008. Construction is expected to begin in the fourth quarter. Bearfire, based in the Dallas suburb The Colony, has identified several possible sites in the Dallas area for the park and is finalizing negotiations, a spokeswoman said Monday.

The theme park will use snowflex, a new technology developed by Briton Engineering in Great Britain that uses a hydrogenated, multi-layered skiing mat that mimics qualities and conditions like those of mountain snow.

The project manager for the park will be McGillivray Consulting Group of Orlando.

Coolzone Winterplex is raising capital for the project and has reached an agreement with former House Majority Leader Dick Armey, who will assist in finding potential equity investors and will act as an adviser to the company.
